It Matters to Me

It matters to me
where you’re from
and what you do.

I’d truly like to know
more about your family,
especially the funny stories.

I might even ask
a leading question or two,
just to confirm a hunch.

But I’m not a detective,
and try not to be judgmental.

Rather I’m interested in our roots,
those tiny, spidery tendrils
way down deep inside
most of us just ignore,
but make us who we are.

Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light.
