Listen Again

It doesn’t matter
if you’ve heard it before.
Listen again.

There’s another first time
every five hundred times or so.
That’s when a neuron fires
or the light bulb goes on.

I’m not trying to piss you off.
The only way to integrate wisdom
is experience and repetition.
I’m only here to testify.

I woke up today
and finally realized why
Rumi has been reminding me
don’t go back to sleep.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.
Rumi translated by Coleman Barks from Essential Rumi
