No Hard Feelings

To my fellow men I say,
tell us what you’re feeling.
And as you’d expect,
I get a lot of blank stares.

I know it’s a dirty trick
to ask a man his feelings.
In the spectacle of a befuddled man,
we see the helpless little boy.

But on the rare occasion
when I do sit with other men,
to the extent we can reveal
what it is we’re feeling,
I see how easily I turn
most emotions into anger.

When I am sad
it becomes anger.

When I am afraid
it becomes anger.

When I am unhappy
it becomes anger.

Once I overheard a woman
tell a friend it upset her
to see a grown man cry.

I only wish she realized,
how badly we need to do so.

Thoughts are the shadows of our feelings - always darker, emptier and simpler.
Friedrich Nietzsche
