No Shows

Who is it that shows up
when we don't?

Somebody always arrives
wearing our clothes,
talking the way we do.

We've all met this person
and held long conversations with them,
careful not to betray their disguise.

But aren't we all
just a bunch of no-shows
assuming our expected roles?

I think it's about time
we come out of the shadows.

You and I were made
to occupy the space
of our one true being.

That long shadow
we've been hiding behind
belongs to the divine.

Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.
