The Past

Let’s remember the past for what it is
and not pretend it was better or worse.
We often see things as black or white,
yet my oldest memories are all shades of gray.

The past serves us best as an abstract thing.
because we don’t all see it quite the same.
And the past eludes our wanting grasp,
as it recedes ever further away in time.

Don’t bother waiting for the past to return.
The future will remind us what we’ve forgotten.

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.
