Warrior Energy

What did I do
with my warrior energy?

What did you do
with yours?

With the sound of every bell
I imagine a referee yelling,
”Fight!”

The majority of my life
I’ve chosen to step aside,
follow my father’s advice
and turn the other cheek.
I preferred vigilance to pugilism.

In my youth, I found other ways
to release my warrior energy.
There were games of football
and a weight set in the basement.

What my life did to distract,
time multiplied to diminish
my aggressive energies.

Now at an inflection point in life,
I venture back towards the ring,
and watch a younger generation
wrestling with their warrior energy.

Any great warrior is also a scholar, and a poet, and an artist.
