Being Human

Being Human

It's natural for us to go silent.

When words
become more noise,
we stop listening.

When there is no time
to appreciate what we're shown,
we stop seeing.

When sweet and savory food
is shoveled before us,
we stop tasting.

When exhaust and chemicals
waft on every breeze,
we stop smelling.

And when stories
no longer arouse our empathy,
we stop feeling.

When all we do
is keep doing,
we cease being human.

As far as we can discern,
the sole purpose of human existence
is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.

~ Carl Jung
