Lunch with an Old Friend

Lunch with an Old Friend

...is like looking into a mirror.

When the stress of a busy day
gives way in an instant,
you'll often hear a sigh
followed by a question
from an old friend.

What happened
to the last twenty five years?

We both blink
but have no answers.

I look at him
then peer over his shoulder
half-expecting the explanation
to be right there.

We both stare blindly
thinking about our younger days
when looking backward was impossible
and looking forward was so easy.

The meaning of life.
The wasted years of life.
The poor choices of life.
God answers the mess of life with one word:
'grace.'
