Roads

Roads

What lies just beyond the road?

Paved roads go everywhere.
Some go to places that matter
and others absolutely nowhere.

Some roads are littered with debris
like memories of our days spent
going back and forth
from one place to another.

Some roads hold the graves
of hungry men and women
promised an easy escape
from the darkness within.

Some roads are shiny,
so alluring, so smooth.
Some roads seem promising,
heading off into the blue.

Paths become trails,
trails dirt roads,
roads city streets,
and streets super highways.

The world's a forest,
in which all lose their way;
though by a different path
each goes astray.
