Criticism

Criticism

...is like looking into a mirror.

I did not realize
my own cleverness
until I opened my mouth
and expertly skewered you
with my intense criticism.

The power of my words,
spoken and written,
are blindly intoxicating,
and wielding them blindly
makes me feel powerful.

Of course any sharp object
will always cut both ways.
Soon enough my cleverness
stealthily wounded me
revealing my own acute pain.

I am sorry to think
that you do not get
a man's most effective criticism
until you provoke him.
Severe truth is expressed
with some bitterness.
~ Henry David Thoreau
