For Chuck

For Chuck

A poem inspired by his Tonka Truck.

I'm not going to resist
this dreamlike poem.
If it wants to ramble
before ending abruptly,
then so be it.

I can't control my feelings
and I dare not pick a fight
with those benevolent spirits
wishing to speak through me.

So here it goes...

It's morning and I'm sitting
all alone in a white tow truck.
On the door someone's painted -
Chuck's 24-Hour Service.

Inside this old truck
I wait patiently to respond
to some roadside emergency -
maybe a beleaguered traveler
with a flat tire or dead battery,
lost on his spiritual journey.

One more thing,
on the hood of the truck it says,
You can count on Chuck!

Always remember
the last words of my grandfather,
who said: 'A truck!'
