The Soul's Work

The Soul's Work

...is demolition.

I'm sure the naked soul is blinding.
For who could possibly look upon
the utter essence of all being
with its penetrating eyes
able to see through and beyond
the walls we've constructed
to prevent ourselves from falling
into the arms of God?

The soul cares not
whether we refuse to see
as it quietly goes about dismantling
the fortifications around our hearts
with opportunity after opportunity
to witness our own suffering
as well as the suffering of others,
and to hold that suffering,
allowing our compassion to grow,
while we are learning to love
as God loves.

Oh, bird of my soul, fly away now,
for I possess a hundred fortified towers.
~ Rumi
