Amigos

...are a great blessing.

What is it about friendship
making it so easy
for a child to understand?
Friends need friends
and children never question
their basic neediness.

Friends are always near,
at school or next door.
Friends come in all shapes
and in many sizes and colors.
Friends call to us silently.
Some are furry, others feathery.
Friends may be invisible,
just waiting to be discovered
beneath a heavy rock,
or in the pages of a book.

Friends will come
and friends will go.
This is okay so long as
there will be more friends.

Once in a while,
a friendship catches fire,
and with love fanning the flames,
it becomes so much more.
