Did Not Last

Did Not Last

An ode to equanimity.

There are sad days
when I recall friendships
that did not last,
yet had no ending,
no formal closure.

Yes I know
that you too know
change is a constant,
and there is little peace
for those of us unable
to let go and live.

Still I want meaning,
a greater perspective
on the world I inhabit
and for the many lives
I touch and touch me.

And I want to say
thank you, even though
our friendship did not last.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling
of letting go and holding on.
