Suffering

Suffering

Please tell me what it means.

My dog is injured
and I suffer along with him.

He limps.
I limp.
He endures stoically.
I endure for my sanity.

The circumstances
implore us to do less,
letting the cold stillness
heal the strain deep within
our weary bodies,
hearts and minds.

My dog and I both know
to be alive is to be kinetic.
Yet we must trust this stillness
to somehow let us know
when we may jump again.

To live is to suffer,
to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.
Friedrich Nietzsche
