The Pathless Path

The Pathless Path

...for M.C.

As a child
I spoke to the world
and it spoke to me
in ways I'd forgotten,
until recently.

Along my journey,
I never met a single tree,
toad, squirrel or swallow,
who mentioned retirement,
or would spout on and on
about rugged individualism.

And when tall mountains
would show me their fossils
and tell stories about living
deep beneath the ancient seas,
they never thought to mention
where they went to school
or their plans for the future.

Now from afar,
a woman's voice needles me.
She says that we all think
we're on the road to somewhere,
when what we're really on
is the pathless path.

I believe that all roads lead to the same place -
and that is wherever all roads lead to.
