Belly Fat

Belly Fat

Some may be inevitable.

I want to live inside
the heart of Rumi,
to hear the voice that speaks
only when I am silent.

I want my soul to know
I can feel its subversive hands
steering me in directions
my mind would never go.

I'm ready to lose
that stubborn belly fat,
a symbol of my empty desire
for an easy, unfettered life.

My days are mixed up
in obligation and absurdity.
But at night, just before waking
is when I travel great distances.

I step into an empty boat,
but I am not alone.
I ask, Who are you?
Let go of the rudder, they reply.

A fat stomach never breeds fine thoughts.
~ St. Jerome
