Not Voting

Not Voting

...also sends a message.

I suppose I'll vote,
but without compelling reasons
I can't seem to muster
a patriotic sense of duty,
obligation or honor.

I'm tired of stories,
imagined and embellished,
cynically goading me toward
sympathy and nostalgia,
anger and animosity.

Sadly these days,
voting is much more about
money and manipulation,
than a sense of duty
or public service.

Am I angry‽
Aren't you‽

I'm not saying
don't vote.

I'm not saying
it doesn't matter.

I'm not saying
the struggle for voting rights
should be forgotten.

I'm just saying
it's a valid third option
not to vote.

There's a lot of fuss on the Left about election irregularities,
like, you know, the voting machines were tampered with,
they didn't count the votes right, and so on.
That's all accurate and of some importance,
but of far more importance is the fact
that elections just don't take place,
not in any meaningful sense of the term 'election.'
~ Noam Chomsky

If you think you can slander
a woman into loving you,
or a man into voting for you,
try it till you are satisfied.
~ Abraham Lincoln
