Boomers
What ever happened
to the softer people of my youth,
the ones weary of their elders
who drafted and sent them off
to fight in pointless wars.
I believed in you,
as you pointed to the moon
and told me it was closer
than I could ever imagine.
I was only a child,
but I knew then,
as I know better now,
it’s the broken-hearted
who truly know how to love;
and the beleaguered travelers,
how to move through this world tenderly,
full of gratitude and compassion.
Sooner or later the tide will turn
and this storm will end.
So come back people of my youth,
the promises you made me
have yet to come true.
“Coming generations will learn equality from poverty, and love from woes.”
