Get Some Rest

Simon wakes effortlessly,
then pops right out of bed,
jumping up to greet me.

He's feeling refreshed.
I return his happy greeting
and follow him to the door.

Though Simon's getting older,
sleep still serves him well.
I earnestly doubt he's thinking
beyond this morning's meal.

Drowsily I watch Simon eat
and begin to feel reassured
he and all the other animals
must be praying for us.

Human beings are the only animals of which I am thoroughly and cravenly afraid.
George Bernard Shaw
