Oh So Serious

One of the gifts,
bestowed as we grow older,
is a rediscovered freedom
not to take life so seriously.

I welcome this return
to innocence and levity,
for it makes the passage
into new dimensions of being
a great deal smoother
and more beneficial to all.

I'm sure even someone so serious
as a pope, president, or prime minister,
can no longer look at the world we've made
and not begin laughing hysterically
(or at least chuckling quietly).

Man is most nearly himself when
he achieves the seriousness of a child at play.
