Shallow Pool

Acceptance is a shallow pool.
Even lying down in it
you won’t get all wet.
Others might call it Monday.

Does this make sense?
I’m not sure anyone could
explain to you or to me
how they learned to accept
all they would rather not.

Something feels very true to me
when I look into that shallow pool
and see only miles of pavement
leading me ever further into eternity.

I’m no longer afraid of becoming stuck.
I’ve climbed high enough to get perspective,
then fallen into darkness where there is none.
Every morning I make a cup of tea
with water from that shallow pool.

Happiness can exist only in acceptance.
George Orwell
