Floating

Floating

...in the great ocean of being.

The song begins,
Ladies and gentlemen
we are floating in space.

This is true.
I'm floating untethered,
and feeling disorganized.

All of this space
leads me into chaos.
I'm losing grasp
on my responsibilities,
which from this great distance
look only like silly reasons
invented to justify my being.

I long for rootedness
and the easy metaphors
inherent in earth, sun, moon,
spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Here I am floating in space
peering out into the dark.
I long to know the infinite,
while resting snugly in the intimate.

At night,
when the sky is full of stars and the sea is still
you get the wonderful sensation
that you are floating in space.
