Lou

Lou

I'm still hangin' here.

It takes eons
for wind and water
to level a mountain.
Yet it takes only a lifetime
to return a man or woman
to soil and dust.

I once worked
for a man born in Colorado
and hardened in Illinois.
He was raised by the wind
and therefore had little to say.
But he did have a glass eye
and the intelligence of a creature
who's spent long periods
not living but surviving.

When I knew him
he was all rolling hills,
not the jagged rocks
of his wild youth.
By now he must be dust
blowing across the prairie.

Come Fairies,
take me out of this dull world,
for I would ride with you upon the wind
and dance upon the mountains like a flame!
~ William Butler Yeats
