A Birthday Wish

A Birthday Wish

...for my two oldest friends.

I knew you then,
but I know you both
much better now
that we have grown up
and become our selves.

We tumbled through
our formative years
and into a busy mid-life
still learning the meaning
of family and friendship.

None of us could imagine
the world as it is unfolding today,
and thus I humbly pray
we will not fear tomorrow.

So happy birthday
with peace,
with love,
with the gentle hope
our souls will always welcome
tomorrow!

I remember when the candle shop burned down.
Everyone stood around singing 'Happy Birthday.'
