Final Notes

Final Notes

...until the next song.

It's often something obvious
which gives away the ending.

A laissez-faire shrug
foreshadows my submission,
like the long silent pause
right after a crescendo.

I then sit up stiffly,
elbow on my armrests
waiting for the final notes
while holding my breath,
until an unexpected cough
from the lower balcony
reminds me the show
is already over.

As I get up to leave
I think about tomorrow
and the tuning of the strings
before the next song.

A good song takes on more meaning
as the years pass by.
