The Manuals

The Manuals

Toss 'em in the recycling bin.

Somewhere,
maybe in a tall glass building,
but certainly behind a glowing screen,
there's a technical writer preparing
a manual I'll stubbornly refuse to read.

A good manual takes time
and also great skill to prepare.
The more complex the machine,
the heavier the manual necessary
to keep things running smoothly.

No offense,
but I don't want to read 'em.
I don't particularly trust anything
too complicated not to be obvious.
It's usually for the sake of revenue
or because the task is too complicated
to be worthwhile in the first place.

The very best manuals are
the ancient symbols and pictures
painted on walls and clay vases.
These are no more than reminders
not to make life too difficult.

Language ought to be the joint creation
of poets and manual workers.
~ George Orwell

Any product that needs a manual to work is broken.
~ Elon Musk
