Things I Don't Remember

Things I Don't Remember

How'd the hell I get here?

This morning
my mind wanders
down corridors,
through catacombs,
unable to find
a quiet resting place.

I'm struggling to recall
the words I've just read.
Only the phrase,
we are all house-sitting,
lingers in my head.

Even though I know
my life is brief,
I counsel myself
to be patient,
especially on days
when I'm lost
and distracted.

Our heart glows,
and secret unrest gnaws
at the root of our being.
Dealing with the unconscious
has become a question of life for us.
