Her Stand

Her Stand

For and against...

She made her stand
on a plane in Sweden
protesting the extradition
of an Afghani man.

Here I sit
at home in Ohio
waiting for my turn
to stand for you or
for someone else.

These days,
it takes little to rip
a gaping hole in my certainty,
and perhaps even less
to fill it full of excuses.

My standing may
 be of little consequence.
Yet anyone shining a light
through our veiled reality
is turning the world
inside out.

As someone who is against the death penalty,
it is only right to stand up for those who are faced
with being deported to a land in war.
