Remembering

Remembering

...the best that we can.

Memory is a hole,
but not simply a void
where the truth is twisted,
or forgotten altogether.

I'm thinking more
along the lines of the hole
Alice descended to dine
at the Mad Hatter's table.

And I've never seen a photo
that can tell a story more faithfully,
than an earnest account given
by the bearer of a faulty memory.

We all try our best to remember
what it's important not to forget,
so that we may live more wholly
within the never-ending present.

Memory is a complicated thing,
a relative to truth,
but not its twin.
~ Barbara Kingsolver
