My Routine

My Routine

...works for me.

I keep my routine
hoping,
praying,
my routine will keep me.

It begins before dawn
with a quick accounting
of place, day, and time
as I return to my senses.

For a few moments
I occupy simultaneous space
in the two worlds where we all live
yet are somehow separated thinly
by a permeable consciousness
punctured so easily
by sleep,
by faith,
by a simple yes
and the willingness to see
through different eyes.

My routine
provides necessary balance
without rigid regimentation,
so I may love and inhabit,
then pass between
the profane world I see
and the sacred world I intuit.

I travel a lot;
I hate having my life disrupted by routine.
