Essential Truth #3

Essential Truth #3

You are not that important.

It was probably a man,
one you knew and loved,
who was the first to inform you
you're not that important.

Maybe he did so angrily
shouting inches from your face.
Or maybe he did so passively
by disappearing without a trace.

Or perhaps I'm wrong
and it was someone,
or something else entirely,
who first pulled the wool
away from your eyes.

By now you've spent
all these years searching
and building your life using
a reputation, a job, a family,
something - anything,
in order to show everyone,
especially that person
staring at you in the mirror,
how important you are.

It can work for a while,
but life is nefarious
and has many ways
to empty us of our self.

As you now turn
toward the journey home,
back to who you truly are,
you will find a great peace,
not in your worthiness,
but in those twin abilities
called forgiveness and love,
forever emanating from
your beating heart.

Nearly everything you do is of no importance,
but it is important that you do it.
~ Mahatma Gandhi
