All Goes Away

All Goes Away

...

There's nothing profound
I can think to say
other than it's a fact
all will soon go away.

This place.
those people,
that church and steeple,
the rock over there,
my favorite easy chair,
you and me,
him, her, them, we,
will all someday
go away.

Even things said
to last forever
will eventually succumb
to time and the weather.

Maybe you like
this status quo,
but I truly thought
you'd like to know.

I hardily suggest
you go out and play
before the time
this all goes away.

Waiting for the end, boys,
waiting for the end.
~ William Empson

It is the end. But of what?
The end of France? No.
The end of kings? Yes.
~ Victor Hugo
