Don't Buy More Clothes

Don't Buy More Clothes

...wear the ones you have.

I begin counting backwards
starting at one hundred,
and before getting to eighty
I'm fast asleep and being visited
by strangely familiar strangers
offering their wisdom in riddles.

Now that I'm awake I refuse
to count myself back to that place
where the spirits can manipulate
my unguarded psyche.

So I wrestle to stay awake,
even though I know there's a space
between this world and that one
to make peace with ambiguity.

I say,
beware of all enterprises that require new clothes,
and not rather a new wearer of clothes.
~ Henry David Thoreau
