Our Cells

Our Cells

...keep us from growing.

Don't be caught inside
a room with no windows,
and no doors through which
you may wander outside.

Once you're trapped,
it's so hard to break out.
Most of us soon stop trying,
slowly dying in our cell.

But not you!

You won't be seduced
by simple answers,
or hardened by fear
into a caged beast.

You know love comes
in infinite varieties,
and the way to grow
is out in the open.

I went down to the prison in Menard,
thinking we were the vanguard,
but down there, I got down on my knees
and listened and learned from the people.
~ Fred Hampton
