Bellyache

Bellyache

Or is it bellyaching?

Sometimes it takes
a terrible stomach ache
for me to wake up and realize
it doesn't matter very much
if I make it out anywhere,
or even get anything done.

At this point of my fast
I was hoping for something else,
like maybe a lasting serenity
or some meaningful revelation,
but not with this churning gut.

Sooner or later we all get
a bellyache of our own making.

About all we can do is wait
until the time we may eat again.

God is day and night,
winter and summer,
war and peace,
surfeit and hunger.
~ Heraclitus
