Inside the Lines

Inside the Lines

...is where we play it safe.

I'm not sure what to write
because I'm not sure what to do.

This is an unusual feeling.
I readily admit to always holding
some degree of uncertainty,
but it has rarely influenced
how I go about living my life
as I keep to my daily routine.

I suppose I ought to become
better acquainted with this feeling,
especially in a world convulsing
amidst pandemic and transformation.

Both my heart and gut
are reliable and true as ever,
but my mind is wavering
as it tries to keep me
inside the lines.

Cowardice asks the question, is it safe?
Expediency asks the question, is it politic?
Vanity asks the question, is it popular?
But conscience asks the question, is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take
a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular,
but one must take it because it is right.
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
