Shelter

Shelter

...from the storm...

Build it.
Buy it.
Borrow it.

Within reason,
do whatever it takes
to create meaning,
to establish order,
to garner reputation,
to assert dominion.

But the night will come
when the stars no longer
seem so very distant,
and the wind will mock
that shelter you've built,
like some great pyramid
protecting your precious life.

Follow a shooting star
until it becomes a trail
of luminous dust.

You and I live
but a moment
like that star.

Our fire becomes love
and the shelter for others.

Our bodies become dust
scattered through space.

The easiest way to get a reputation is to go outside the fold,
shout around for a few years as a violent atheist or a dangerous radical,
and then crawl back to the shelter.
~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
