Out of Darkness

Out of Darkness

...came a path of promise.

I was on my way elsewhere
when the darkness caught up to me.

I couldn't help but succumb
to its shadowy embrace.
The darkness though mystifying,
is unexpectedly peaceful.

In time I became accustomed
to living in the darkness,
even learning my way around
in utter blindness.

So when the light finally broke,
you can probably understand
my initial reluctance to follow
the new path shown to me.

I no longer miss that darkness
even though it sometimes returns
at odd and unexpected hours.
I never know how long it will stay
or what new things may be revealed
by its gradual departure.

And what I am beheld again
What is, and no man understands;
And out of darkness came the hands
That reach thro' nature, moulding men.
~ Alfred, Lord Tennyson
