Emily

She writes a poem
with only a few words
scribbled on a scrap of paper,
upside down and in pencil.

Poetry pours out of me
as if from a broken pipe,
ink spilled everywhere.

I then dutifully type
and disseminate my words
in electronic bytes.

I hope she and I both
say the same things.
Though I suspect she often
says them much better.

Doesn’t it make more sense
to talk about the brevity of life
in just a word or two?

Saying nothing... sometimes says the most.
Emily Dickinson
