Tension

Putting something just out of reach
creates tension.
And there’s nothing quite so intolerable
as lingering tension.
It just sits there,
explosive and unrealized,
a seemingly infinite mass of energy,
waiting to be detonated.
Yet we tend to avoid tension,
hoping it will just dissipate.

Tension is always forming and everywhere.
It animates our lives becoming
the movement before the movement,
something we can hold without a release
and through which we may one day know
the very presence of God.

We who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive.
Martin Luther King Jr.
