When You Are Not Afraid

Can you feel the difference
in how you love others
when you are not afraid?

Should I awaken in the night,
it is my fears that prevent me
from falling back asleep.

How easily my mind conjures demons!
They swirl around me in the dark,
warning me never to take a chance.

The light of day always confirms
the impermanence of my fears.
As someone prescient once said,
We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

The moment you left me,
Sweetness was stolen from my tongue.
