You Can Pause

You can pause for a moment.
You can always pause.

Spit.
Yawn or cough.
Lift your head.
Look around.

There isn’t always a reason
to keep plowing along.

Let the wind do the work.
There’s no need to push the river.

I went to the desert
because space fills me.
It was at the shore
I fell in love with the land.

We poets don’t always know
the meaning behind our verse.
Maybe you and I are the kind
who first hear the answers,
then learn the questions.

Take your finger off the trigger.
It’s the one you resist knowing
who’s chasing you.

He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.
Albert Einstein

This is one of Brian’s new poems, written on March 24, 2023. There are many sources of inspiration within it. Within Rumi’s poetry is the observation that there’s no need to push the river. And I’ve experienced a great deal of healing in the desert…
