If You Must

If You Must

...but it's not necessary.

Resist
if you must.
Time,
or some else,
will take care
of whatever you
cannot face,
cannot manage,
cannot acknowledge,
cannot bring yourself to do,
before the ultimate letting go
frees your immortal soul
to travel between the stars
like a streak of light
igniting the night sky
to show all of us watching
what might happen
if we can become a yes
even as our head
says no.

At fifteen life had taught me undeniably that surrender, in its place,
was as honorable as resistance, especially if one had no choice.
~ Maya Angelou
