A Humble Spirit

A Humble Spirit

...authors new life within us.

A crowd gathers.
It's a quarter after the hour.
They've come full of hope
to see their loved ones anew,
changed by living sober
at this treatment facility.

The stage is set.
A captive audience awaits.
Before weekly visitation
comes my ordinary story.

What can I say
they don't already know?
How can I speak
to their individual pain,
letting them know
others have it too?
Will I be able to say
what needs to be said,
and to urge them deeper
into the living mystery
within their own being?

A humble spirit
now settles upon us.
Thus the odds are good
God will be joining us.

Do you wish to rise?
Begin by descending.
You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds?
Lay first the foundation of humility.
~ Saint Augustine
