A Better Me

A Better Me

...my lifelong task...

It's strange but true,
I've become a better me
through my failures
and my heartbreaks,
by thinking too much
then refusing to let go,
by injury and infirmity,
and by an imposed humility
which one day delivered me
to laughter and new friendships,
along with the strength
to be honest with myself,
no matter what the truth.

I've become a better me,
not by being the person
I thought I should be,
but by praying soulfully
to remember who I am,
and then allowing love
to change me.

An arrogant person considers himself perfect.
This is the chief harm of arrogance.
It interferes with a person's main task in life -
becoming a better person.
~ Leo Tolstoy
