The Fixers

The Fixers

It's good to know at least one.

It's an ordinary night
and here we're gathered,
a bunch of misfits
middle-aged and older,
sitting around a table
in the windowless basement
of a downtown church.

Everyone wants to be a help,
and everyone is just a little bit
too helpful and too knowledgeable.
That's how we came to be here,
this community of fixers.

What else is there to stay?
It's just an ordinary night
and the fixers are gathered
doing what we do.

I try to be the fixer of situations
and I gravitate to people who are institutional misfits.
