A Great Awakening

A Great Awakening

You'll know it by its love.

This only just occurred to me,
though it seems like an old truth:
We create the world we fear
because fear tells us it's inevitable.

We can consult sages and mystics,
but we need only to look into a mirror
to see violence begets violence,
while love generates even more love.

Few are born truly alive,
more are jolted awake by living,
yet most of us will still need others
to offer us a gentle patience,
and to point to those deeper truths
which at first seem contradictory
or as cute riddles to be solved.

. . .

Have you ever seen a great awakening?
Would you even know it if you had?

I think it might be frightening
and accompanied by terrible suffering,
before calming into the peacefulness
of a transcendent acceptance
at the dawning of a new day.

That is the real spiritual awakening, when something emerges from within you that is deeper than who you thought you were. So, the person is still there, but one could almost say that something more powerful shines through the person.
~ Eckhart Tolle
