Soul Talk

Soul Talk

It's all true.

Cut off your head.
You won't need it
to locate your heart,
asleep near the center
of your animate being.

Yet don't lose your head.
Store it somewhere safe.
You may still need it
to set all the clocks
and predict the weather.

But for now,
listen to my voice.
I am your soul,
unique and subversive,
a non-native speaker.

For years you treated me
like an unstable child.
Have you forgotten
when we played together?

It's time to come out
as who you truly are,
headless and humble,
with heart open to receive.

Inasmuch as love grows in you,
in so much beauty grows;
for love is itself the beauty of the soul.
~ Augustine of Hippo
