Immortality

Immortality

What's the point?

The immortals must be bored.
They've got nothing much to do,
even though they have plenty of time
and can do anything they want.

I've always wondered
whether immortals really exist,
or if I might just be consumed
by my own mortality.

Others assure me I've lived before,
agreeing just prior to my birth,
to forget everything I once knew,
and to return in innocence.

Accepting my life will one day end,
and uncertain whether I'll be back,
I'd probably ought to get busy,
having so much yet to learn.

One has to pay dearly for immortality;
one has to die several times while one is still alive.
~ Friedrich Nietzsche
